University Overview

The University of Sydney, Australia's first university, was established in 1850.Today, with a rich diversity of courses and a reputation for teaching and research excellence, the University attracts students and staff from around the world. Many of the academic staff and graduates are leaders in their respective fields, making major contributions both locally and internationally.

The central campus is situated in the heart of multicultural Sydney, the nation's commercial capital and host city for the 2000 Olympic Games. Undergraduate

Sydney offers a wide range of undergraduate degreesand puts students in touch with a world of possibilities through the university's international affiliations, industry and alumni mentoring programs and innovative partnerships. Students can choose to study either through the bachelor's or honours program. More than 500 scholarships intended for undergraduate students help them achieve their goals at Sydney.

The basic entry for undergraduate courses in Sydneyis assessed on the basis of a student's academic results. Examples of these requirements include the Australian tertiary admission rank (ATAR) or equivalent, tertiary or TAFE study or a foundation course. Having an ATAR is not the only way students can get accepted in Sydney, the university also offers other pathways.

Postgraduate

A wide variety of postgraduate courses are on offer at Sydney. By successfully completing a postgraduate program, students are able to qualify for a profession or gain accreditation, enhance career path and change careers altogether or pursue a personal interest. There are two main types of postgraduate courses at Sydney - research and coursework.

Coursework programs consist of units of study (subjects) rather than research work. They usually require attendance at lectures and tutorials. Sydney also offers a choice of study modes, such as full-time, part-time, part-time evening, block or intensive, distance or online so that graduate students can organize their study commitments to suit their lifestyle.

Study Online

Distance education courses in the graduate diploma, graduate certificate, bachelor degree and master's program are available at Sydney. Students can choose from a wide variety of study areas including public health, medicine (clinical epidemiology), clinical epidemiology, biostatistics and bioethics.

Study online students can get pre-recorded lectures, synchronized with a PowerPoint presentation. These can be downloaded from the unit's e-learning site. Students can also gain access to an e-library which has great resources for study.

Online support services are also in place such as student forums, online workshops and webinars, a help desk where online students can keep in contact with fellow students via email and a discussion board within a specific unit's e-learning site.

International Students

The University of Sydney is home to a lot of overseas students. To help them during their stay in Australia, the university has prepared various support services. Pre-departure briefings consisting of information on applying for student visa, organizing finances, travel and health, accommodation (both temporary and permanent) and important documents to pack are discussed. The university offers free airport pick-up services to take students to their accommodation.

Along with these support services, Sydney offers a comprehensive orientation program and pre-enrolment briefing for international students. This will familiarize students with the university, and enable them to meet other students and faculty members. International student advisers are also available to discuss with students any concerns and questions they have. A number of international student scholarships along with financial assistance services are also offered by Sydney.

Tuition Fees

University of Sydney tuition fees vary depending on student status and the course being undertaken. International students are generally required to pay the full fee for undergraduate study while both local and undergraduate students can be required to pay the full fee for postgraduate study. Scholarships

Sydney scholarships are intended for all students whether they are studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. Scholarships are available for year 12, gap and mature age students. The university also has a number of scholarships available, including many which are specifically designed for international students. Some scholarships are faculty-based and others are available across all faculties.

Scholarships at the university may be given based on a combination of school examination results, including ATAR or equivalent, and other achievements that show qualities such as leadership, creativity, self-motivation and communication skills. Students are encouraged to look for funding from sources outside of Sydney. They may apply for scholarships from companies, governmental groups, religious missions and other universities.

University Life

University life at Sydney is vibrant and fun. With more than 200 clubs and societies, there are plenty of opportunities for students to enjoy their favourite hobbies and make their student life more fulfilling. For students who want to enjoy a healthy, active, and social university experience, Sydney encourages them to participate in university sports and recreational activities. Sporting facilities at Sydney are always available for student use.

Aside from all these, Sydney offers a broad range of food outlets and retail shops to suit student needs and budget on campus. Student supports services such as accommodation and living assistance, disability services, health and welfare services, learning assistance, career guidance and religious care are all provided by the university.
