Flinders University Home Page

One of Australia's leading teaching and research institutions, Flinders University combines traditional values with a progressive outlook and a flair for innovation. At times, we are also proudly unconventional.

Applications for our courses have risen consistently in recent years, reflecting our determination to provide exciting and flexible options that reflect the needs of today's students, their future employers and the wider community. This includes undergraduate degrees and diplomas and postgraduate programs through to doctoral level.

On a per capita basis we consistently rank among Australia's top universities for spending on research and experimental development and for the citation of our work in professional journals.

Equity also is an important issue, and we are particularly proud of our reputation for offering innovative special access schemes that provide opportunities for people from non-traditional backgrounds. Our student population reflects this commitment. Of the 13,092 people enrolled in 2002, for example, more than one-third are studying part-time or externally and about 45% are aged over 25. We also have about 1200 international students, from more than 65 countries.

More than 500 students are completing PhD studies and a further 800 are undertaking Masters degrees by coursework or research. We have nearly 700 academic staff, including about 75 Professors, 90 Associate Professors and 175 Senior Lecturers. Most are involved with both teaching and research and all are committed to their students, which helps explain why we receive glowing reports whenever graduates and employers are surveyed. Flinders has long been considered the "friendly university".
