University Overview

Southern Cross University (SCU) is a highly regarded Australian public university established under its own Act of Parliament. The quality programs offered by the University have high academic standards combined with an industry and professional focus.

The University is located on the east coast of Australia in northern New South Wales, one of the country's most beautiful regions. All cities are serviced by daily air, rail and road transport from the capital cities Sydney and Brisbane.

Lismore, Coffs Harbour and Tweed Heads are regional cities which are safe, friendly and accessible. The region is famous for its idyllic sub-tropic climate, World Heritage-listed National Parks, lush rainforests and unspoiled beaches. Undergraduate

SCU offers undergraduate courses in study areas that suit students' interests and professional goals. Undergraduate students can choose from flexible study options such as the on-campus study and online/distance education. Postgraduate

The Division of Research supports the SCU research community by providing a range of services to research students such as research scholarships and research services and grants.

The Southern Cross Postgraduate Association (SCPA) supports graduate students and ensure that they have a pleasant postgraduate student experience. The organization provides a forum for discussion, debate and networking among postgrad students. The SCPA is also in-charge of creating events and activities for students all year round.

Study Online

Study online courses in the preparation, undergraduate, honours and postgraduate coursework levels are offered at SCU. Students can pick from a variety of subject areas such as business, creative and performing arts, education, health and human sciences, humanities and social sciences, tourism and hospitality, humanities and social sciences and law and justice.

SCU uses web-based technologies to assist students to actively engage with lecturers and other students, no matter where they are located. External students may receive a combination of podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes.

International Students

Leaving home and studying in an entirely different country can be very difficult thus Southern Cross University has created comprehensive support services for overseas students. Support starts as early as pre-departure. International students are given information about organizing student visa, things and important documents to bring, understanding OSHC insurance, safety in Australia and accommodation options. Upon arrival, SCU offers free airport pick-up to bring students to their accommodation.

Once students are properly settled in, the university encourages them to attend the week long comprehensive orientation for international students. Dedicated international student advisers are also available to orient students about organizing a mobile phone and internet service, opening a bank account or any random questions and concerns. One of the most important support programs of QUT is the wide variety of international student scholarship grants.

Southern Cross University tuition fees vary depending on student status and the course being undertaken. International students are generally required to pay the full fee for undergraduate study while both local and undergraduate students can be required to pay the full fee for postgraduate study. Scholarships

SCU offers a range of scholarships for undergraduate, postgraduate and disadvantaged students. There are also scholarships available to help students study overseas for a short period as an international exchange student. The basis for scholarship selection varies widely, depending on the scholarship and degree that a student is applying for.

Through SCU's rising stars program, scholarships are made available by the vice chancellor, industry providers and generous donors who believe in the value of education. The Australian Government also provides scholarships.While the selection criteria may differ, SCU scholarships are designed to recognise academic achievement, community involvement and leadership.

University Life

SCU is true to its banner of 'Live, Work, Play' as the university life is filled with many student activities and programs. To meet people and pursue an interest,students can join in an SCU club/society or play in a community sporting/recreation team or group. SCU has several fitness centers and sporting facilities for tennis, volleyball and basketball.

To make their student life even better, students can participate in social events, outings and excursions scheduled by the student association. With a number of student support programs such as accommodation services, guidance and counselling, medical and dental services, financial assistance, disability support and scholarships, campus life is made easy for students.

Student Reviews

SCU student reviews contain positive reactions about the university's lecturers and tutors with many comments saying that teachers are very proactive in helping students who need academic support and assistance. Students also add that the non-teaching staff are similarly friendly and welcoming.
