University Overview

The University of the Sunshine Coast offers a broad mix of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs, Study Abroad courses, English language programs and research opportunities. The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) first opened its doors as the Sunshine Coast University College in 1996. In 1999 it was renamed to the current University of the Sunshine Coast. The main campus is on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland around 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Brisbane.

Undergraduate

USC offers a range of single or double bachelor degrees. The university has almost 100 undergraduate programs to choose from, relevant to the real world and covering a vast array of professions. Students can also take courses through associate and combined degree, diploma and honours program. Aside from all these, students are given the opportunity to study overseas.

The basic entry requirement for undergraduate studies at USC is an ATAR qualification. However, for students who are not able to meet this requirement, there are a number of other pathways to gain entry into tertiary study. Examples include year 12, TAFE and the indigenous direct entry and access scheme (IDEAS).

Postgraduate

USC's coursework programs are offered at graduate certificate, graduate diploma or master's level. Higher degrees by research at masters and doctorate level are also available. Postgraduate programs can enhance a student's previous degree, offer a change in direction, or create a new career.

To help postgraduate students balance study, family life and work, USC prepared study options such as part-time, full-time, online and external studies. There are two faculties at USC, the faculty of arts and business and the faculty of science, health, education and engineering.

International Students

USC sees the struggles that first-time overseas students experience in an unknown country. To address international student needs, the university begins its support services as early as pre-departure. Students are thoroughly briefed prior to their arrival in Australia. Discussions on student visa, health insurance, the essential documents to be packed and booking accommodations are all part of the pre-departure briefing.

Upon arrival, students don't have to worry for transportation as USC offers free airport pick-up. After students are fully settled, students have to attend a week long orientation which is scheduled by the university. Guidance services, language support programs, international student advisors, an International Student Centre and international student scholarships are all offered at USC.

Tuition Fees

University of the Sunshine Coast tuition fees vary depending on student status and the course being undertaken. International students are generally required to pay the full fee for undergraduate study while both local and undergraduate students can be required to pay the full fee for postgraduate study. Sample average indicative fees from USC include:

Scholarships

USC students have access to a variety of scholarships, all designed to help pay tuition fees, purchase equipment, pay for accommodation, and meet general living expenses. All types of students including international students, Australian South Sea Islander students and students coming from low-income earning families can apply for USC scholarship.

The university also has numerous scholarships available for higher degree by research students. Students may apply for external scholarships which are funded by organizations and private institutions. Headstart and faculty scholarships are also available at USC.

University Life

USC university life aims to enhance student experience by encouraging students to participate in a range of events and activities on campus. There are leadership groups, sport clubs, student clubs and societies, volunteer opportunities and competitions to suit every student. Student social events are also scheduled for students each semester with the orientation week as the first social event.

Students can also get active in their lunch break with fun and free sporting opportunities on campus. To support student life, USC has many student support services such as accommodation assistance, medical and dental support, learning support, career guidance and counselling, financial assistance and scholarships.

Student Reviews

Among the many USC student reviews, a common feedback includes the university having highly competent and experienced academic staff. According to many student comments, their lecturers are not only smart but they are also friendly, approachable and more than willing to lend a hand. Students add that teachers at USC encourage questioning and interactive discussions.

Another important feature of USC that students notice is the size of its campus. Students say that the small size of the university was an advantage because it allows students to form closer relationships with other students from different colleges.
